Microcoaching Practice

Get ready to give people 5-10 minutes of coaching

The Programme

By the end of the programme, you should be fully ready to start coaching in real life, providing the short and simple coaching sessions that we call microcoaching. Such sessions typically last between five and ten minutes, and all the coach has to do is make the coachee comfortable, ask a suitable open question, and listen attentively.

You will draw upon what you learned on the Begin Coaching course as you work with a partner to develop your practical skills.

  • Your learning partner doesn’t have to have taken the Begin Coaching course. If they haven’t, you will need to explain a little of how coaching works. You can do this by running through the ‘recap’ pages with them.
  • You can ask a friend, family member, or colleague to join you. Tell them that you’d spend a couple of hours playing coaching games together.
  • You can find someone to join you by using the Finding Partners thread on the Begin Coaching forum, or by performing a search for people who are ‘looking for learning partners’ on our members page.
  • The learning games can be played in person or via video-chat.

Programme Structure

The programme has three main parts:

  • Quick-Fire, a game that will help you build your question-asking skills.
  • What-And, a game that will help you build your attentive listening skills.
  • Reciprocal Coaching, an exercise where you take turns in the roles of coach and coachee.

Assessment

You can earn a Level One Coach certificate by uploading evidence that you successfully completed two microcoaching sessions.

Next Steps

The programme concludes with a Next Steps section, where you’ll think ahead and choose when to apply your coaching skills in real life.
