Coaching for Impact

The Course

During this course, you’ll learn what it takes for a short piece of coaching to have a powerful impact on the coachee. The process is fundamentally simple.

The coach must:

1. Create a coaching dynamic by putting the coachee at ease, asking an open question, then listening attentively to what the coachee says.
2. Use further questions to help the coachee think about what they can usefully do in an important area of their professional life, or personal life.
3. Prompt the coachee to commit to following through on the best course of action they’ve been able to imagine.

A Valuable Skill

All managers can benefit from being able to provide impactful coaching. Their teams will perform better and develop faster. And the manager themself will become the type of person who deserves to hold key leadership positions in the future.

Coaching skills are also useful in medicine, where how patients think and act is important, and in sales and consulting. Coachees see the best course of action they could take for themselves. This is often valuable.

Course structure

There are six units:

In Coachee Insights, you’ll learn about the primary mechanism behind impactful coaching — creating the conditions for insight.

In Coachee Commitments, you’ll learn about coaching’s secondary mechanism — the action commitments that coachees make during the coaching.

In Structuring a Session, you’ll learn how the three-act model can be used to structure short pieces of coaching.

In Creating Comfort, you’ll look at the first of coaching’s core tools — a comfortable environment.

In Open Questions, you’ll look at the second core tool — open questions.

In Attentive Listening, you’ll look at the final tool — attentive listening.
